Founded in 1979 as a Higher Technology Institute, EMU is the TRNC's state university and the island's oldest higher education institution. Across 12 faculties it offers more than 200 programmes to around 16,000 students from 110 countries. Frequently asked questions

Are TRNC university degrees recognized in Turkey?
Most TRNC universities are recognized by YÖK (the Turkish Council of Higher Education), and their formal programmes appear in the ÖSYM YKS guide; degrees from these programmes are valid in Turkey. Recognition can vary by university and programme, so we verify the current YÖK list for you before you apply.
I am a Turkish citizen; how do I get placed in a TRNC university?
You can be placed in formal associate and bachelor's programmes through ÖSYM central placement (YKS); in 2025, 11,587 students were placed in TRNC universities this way. Many universities also run their own scholarship and entrance exams; we plan the most advantageous route together.
Which documents do I need as an international student?
The general framework: a high school diploma and transcript (with apostille and Turkish/English translation where required), a passport and photographs. Admission is mostly exam-free, based on your diploma grade; English-taught programmes require IELTS/TOEFL or the university's own proficiency exam, with a preparatory school option if needed.
What is the language of instruction at TRNC universities?
Depending on the university and programme, instruction is in English, Turkish or both. METU Northern Cyprus and ITU-TRNC teach entirely in English, and most universities operate an English preparatory school.
How does the student permit (student visa) process work?
You enter the TRNC as a student with the university's acceptance letter; after arrival you complete registration, apply for a student permit through the Ministry of Interior's online system, obtain a health report and pay the fee. Our Documents & Immigration team runs this entire process on your behalf.
