International students enter the TRNC with their university acceptance letter and then complete a student residence permit on the island. The process is straightforward when followed in the right order; this guide walks you through it step by step, based on the Ministry of Interior's official procedure.
Before you travel: admission documents
Admission to TRNC universities is mostly exam-free, based on your high school diploma grade. The standard application file looks like this:
- High school diploma (apostille and certified Turkish/English translation where required)
- Transcript of records
- Passport copy (valid for your study period)
- Passport-size photographs
- English proficiency certificate if you have one (IELTS/TOEFL); otherwise universities offer their own proficiency exam and a preparatory school option
Once your application is accepted, the university issues an acceptance letter. That letter is your key to the next stage.
The student permit, step by step
- Enter the TRNC with your acceptance letterPresent the university's acceptance (invitation) letter at the border and enter the country as a student. This entry record is the foundation of your permit application.
- Complete university registrationRegister at your university within 2 months of arrival at the latest. Missing this window complicates your permit application.
- Apply onlineSubmit your application through the Ministry of Interior's online system under the student permits section. Your university's international office and your consultant guide you here.
- Obtain a health reportComplete the required health screening and have the report approved. Appointment queues get long during registration weeks, so book early.
- Pay the immigration feeThe fee is paid online; the permit is not issued until payment clears.
- Collect your permitWhen the system shows your permit as ready, collect your student permit document and keep it safe. The permit is renewed every academic year.

- Missing the 2-month registration window between entry and university registration; this is the issue we see most often.
- Trying to apply online before registering: the order matters; the system cannot process students whose registration is incomplete.
- Leaving the health report to the last day: appointment availability is seasonal.
